Welcome
The Permanent Representative
Ambassador Rüdiger König represents Germany on the North Atlantic Council and heads Germany’s Permanent Delegation to NATO.

Since August 2020 Mr. König represents Germany on the North Atlantic Council and heads Germany’s Permanent Delegation to NATO. Up until then he had led the Directorate-General for Crisis Prevention, Stabilisation, Post-Conflict Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Assistance since it was set up in the Federal Foreign Office in March 2015. Its creation is one of the results of a broad public consultation and review process aimed at strengthening the German Government’s foreign-policy instruments in fragile contexts. Prior to this post, Mr König served as Crisis Management Commissioner at the Federal Foreign Office. Since joining the foreign service in 1986, his postings have included the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations in New York, the Directorate-General for the United Nations and Global Issues at the Federal Foreign Office in Bonn and Berlin, and Federal President Rau’s Private Office in Berlin. During his time as Head of Political Section at the Permanent Delegation of the Federal Republic of Germany to NATO and as Head of the Special Task Force for Afghanistan and Pakistan in particular, he focused on international security policy and supported the peacebuilding process in Afghanistan, where he served as German Ambassador from 2010 to 2013.
